So happened to recall a movie which I watched a few months back. It is titled “The Persuit of Happyness“. The life story of how Christopher P. Gardner made it through the harsh conditions in life who eventually became a successful stock broker and now a millionaire entrepreneur.
The movie felt close to my heart. First of all, because he battled to be a stock broker when currently I am an aspiring full-time retail trader. He was alone with a kid when he was in the most difficult of situations. While his kid was portrayed as a five-year-old in the movie, in actual fact, his kid was only two years old. I have a lovely daughter who is approaching two years of age in a few months. I could almost understand how he felt when he was down and out. How he wished for the best for his child when his capabilities were limited. He was right, it really pains the heart to see one’s child being left in the care of some strangers at a tender age like two years old. My girl was with the infant day care since 2 months old. I am very proud of her.
My situation is certainly not as grueling as what Chris Gardner experienced. At least, I have a very supportive and capable wife, a permanent roof over my head, a bed which I can sleep comfortably in after a day’s work, a full-time job that pays decently and allow me to have the luxury of time to pursue my dreams. I don’t have to sleep in toilets, read under the corridor lights etc. Already much better than Chris Gardner, really…
I have read the book “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill and is listening to the audio book these few days. I was reminded of a rich person trait where one must possess “the desire to succeed”. Even if it means destroying all the retreat paths, then there is only one way out, forward to success. Chris Gardner did not have any choice, he has to succeed. Beside this push factor, there must also be this pull factor. One must visualize and be able to feel success so that our behaviors, actions and beliefs will gravitate towards the acquired feeling of success.
We must have dreams and must follow where our dreams lead us to. Dreams are certainly not for finding some silly solution to some silly problem.
The bottom line is, if Chris Gardner can do it, so can I.
