It’s been a while since I introduced free trading tools. Thought I will share the free charting tool that I use every day, that is, besides the Prophet charts provided by OptionsXpress.
It is called the QuoteTracker. Instructions for downloading can be found here. It is a powerful tool and it is free. Is there a catch? Well, for the free version, there is a small advertisement banner in the main window that you cannot get rid of. Personally, I feel it is still bearable. And the free version only allows viewing of up to 2 days of intraday data and 6 months of historical data. That is why I still supplement it with the Prophet charts from OptionsXpress. I use QuoteTracker purely to keep track of my intraday trades.
So what so powerful about it?
- It maintains the chart positions the way I want it, every time I open it.

- I can use a color pin to specify all the windows I want to update at once when I click on a particular ticker. For instance, when I click on GS in the “Watch List” window that has a red pin at the top-right-hand corner of the window, the other 2 windows that are tagged with the red pin are updated with the data for GS.

- It calculates and plots (see P and S1 below) for me the pivot points automatically!

- Quick switching between the different views with shortcut keys. Eg, hit keys “5″ and “6″ to switch between 2 day and 1 day view, hit keys “Ctrl-5″ and “Ctrl-6″ to switch between 15 min charts and 30 min charts. Speed is what we need for intraday trades.
- I can plot any line on the chart, right-click on it, convert it into a trendline and even set alerts based on it!

- The chart data is fed in from your online brokerage account (both Interactive Brokers and OptionsXpress are supported). For some online brokers, you can even configure news to be fed into the QuoteTracker (with news alerting function as well). If you are adventurous enough, you can also configure to trade directly off the QuoteTracker platform!
- Check out the comprehensive right-click menu. I find the “Save Chart Template and Reset All” function especially cool. It can instantly update all my charts at one go with my new settings. It is a breeze.

- And more screen shots of the Quotetracker here.
TD AmeriTrade has bought over QuoteTracker. So if you are a TD AmeriTrade user, the full featured version of the QuoteTracker comes free! New users may find it difficult to get use to, just like for any other professional software applications. It has a slightly higher learning curve. Once you get the hang of it, you will fly ![]()
