I have observed SGX has been conducting the course titled “Insights to a Professional Trading Career”. I decided to pop in and check it out one day. That was where I got to know Tom Yuen (floor symbol: YCK) - a ex-Simex Nikkei futures pit trader. After the pit closed, he continued to trade the Nikkei futures electronically from home. He did that successfully for 18 years. Intrigued by his down-to-earth style, his pit stories and his passion despite talking about trading till 11pm, I signed up for the course that he is teaching - “Applied Technical Analysis”.
More about the course:
- Website: Go to SGX Academy website and you will find the course there. It is one of the few courses listed under the “Professional Training” Category
- Duration: 5 days (3 weekdays from 7pm - 10.30pm, Sat and Sun from 9.00am - 1.00pm)
- Cost: S$800
- Held at SGX training room
- The course is rolled out by SGX but organized by different brokerage companies. It is the same course and same trainer but some sessions are organised by Ong First and others by Phillip Futures.
- In a bid to generate interest in futures trading and also to generate more trading volume
, SGX invited 2 ex-Simex floor traders Tom Yuen (YCK) and Leonard Kok (LED) back to conduct courses to educate the public. They are endorsed as SGX-certified trainers and rolled out 2 courses that are listed under the “Professional Training” category. - In the course, YCK basically taught us how he trades, the tools he used and his perspective of the market.
- No specific timeframe, no specific instrument, no specific entry or exit points. He tries to impart to us the essence of discretionary trading. But because he trades the Nikkei-225 futures, majority of his chart examples will be using the Nikkei.
- In all the trading concepts, chart patterns, candlestick patterns and indicators he touched on, he explained his rationale for using them and often illustrated with floor stories or analogy that made an impression instantly.
jmot’s Takeaway
Well, it is not everyday that we can learn trading from a real floor trader. So I really appreciate this opportunity to learn from Tom. I was fascinated by a floor trader’s view of the market. How he views support/resistance, trend lines candlesticks and indicators. How he uses different types of charts to watch out for different things.
There was particular highlight on the trading mindset, where he once again shared a plethora of stories from his days as a floor trader to illustrate his points.
If you find this post or this blog is helpful to you in any way...do consider buying jmot a kopi (aka coffee)!

Just exactly HOW does a floor trader view support/resistance based on the assumption that from the way you wrote varies from the rest of the Gurus that are teaching?
If you could just shred more light, perhaps it could spare quite a number of us the risk of attending something that we already knew. Thanks
